John Misto is famous and multi- award winning writer from Sydney, NW, who has been recognized for playwrights, scriptwriting and other writings since 1981.He was originally a trained lawyer but started writing for theater, film and television specially for children aged  7-12 years.

John Misto is an in-demand speaker and people always keen to listen to his talks. He has been exclusively comprehensive in his writings. Misto won an AFI Award for his script for The Day of the Roses, and an Australian Writers’ Guild Award. The mini-series also won a Silver Logie. Misto also won 4AFI awards for his other scripts include The Damnation of Harvey McHugh.

He was co-writer for the mini-series, The Last Frontier, which was rated as the top mini-series, and for the highly acclaimed ABC series, Palace of Dreams. Both the film and the John's television script Heroes' Mountain won a Gold Plaque at the Chicago International Television Awards and his latest series The Cut has been recently aired on ABC TV.

Misto is also well known for his very exclusive work in writing prominent telemovies. His latest telemovie, Sisters of War, won the Queensland Premier’s Literary Award. It’s the true story of a friendship between an Australian nun and an army nurse who were captured by the Japanese in 1942. Misto also wrote Heroes’ Mountain about the rescue of Stuart Diver after the Thredbo Landslide. .” Heroes’ Mountain won a Gold Plaque at the Chicago International Television Festival.  

 John Misto has written popular plays which has won him various awards. He has been loved by his fans for his fascinating and thrilling stories.  John’s most recent play, Dark Voyager, was a box-office hit at Sydney’s Ensemble Theatre. The play made the audience laughing and gasping in amazement.

 

His latest play, Harp on the Willow starring Marina Prior had a sell-out season at Sydney's Ensemble Theatre and won the Rodney Seaborn Playwright's Award for Best New Play.  His first novel The Devil's Companions, a thrilling story about a young detective, was published by Hodder Headline in 2005. His play Sky was nominated for the Sydney Critics' Award for Best New Play of the Year and also received a commendation from the Human Rights Commission.

Misto's play The Shoe-Horn Sonata has been well known and repeatedly performed. It is the story of two old ladies who are forced to recount their war-time experiences. It won both the NSW Premier's Literary Award and the Australia Remembers National Play Competition - the biggest playwriting prize ever offered in Australia. However he donated his $20,000 prize to the Australian Nurses' National Memorial Fund.  The play has been widely studied in schools in NSW since 1999 and has been reprinted 14 times.  

Misto’s film and book Peter & Pompey were studied in primary schools throughout Australia and won him a Penguin award for Best TV Script. He was also awarded for his very popular telemovie, Nature Causes.John Misto has been shining light into the dark corners of history.
