It wasn't the fact that he left that irritated Lilith. Men had been leaving her behind her whole life. It was that he gave up. Duke Cooper wasn't a quitter, but that is exactly what he did; he quit trying. She wasn't surprised, not in the slightest but . . . she was disappointed. And, if she was being honest with herself, she was hurt— badly.

She didn't know if it hurt more that he walked away or that he did it so completely. Leaving Necropolis, a city both of them loved with their very souls— if either actually had one —was going too far. The city was as much his home as it was hers, even if he was human.

She'd have to go get him, bring him home, prove to him that she loved him, she decided.

He was her husband after all— and it was Valentine's Day.

Lifting the Ersatz, a pill designed to suppress all non-human characteristics, to her lips, Lilith didn't hesitate to swallow it when directed. It didn't take long for the weakness, monsters much like herself described, to set in. It was as if she hadn't fed properly in months— something that had actually happened before. There was a hollow place inside of her too, as if what made her . . . herself, was suddenly gone.

She supposed it was. And that was a good thing because the car she was a passenger in was nearly to the checkpoint everyone who was leaving Necropolis had to stop at. She swallowed hard, her eyes fastened on the men with guns who guarded the doors that only opened at their command. They looked friendly; she knew they were not— not to her kind, at least

"Just breathe," Thanos, her elder brother muttered. He was head of the family, happily married and truly settled down. The last place he should have been on Valentine's Day was beside her, sneaking out of Necropolis for a man who couldn't have cared all that much, since he left.

Here Thanos was though, forever the hero in everyone's story.

"Thanos—"

"He's family." Lilith sighed, unwilling and unable to disagree with her elder brother. Duke wasn't just her husband or family by marriage; he was Thanos' best friend for over fifteen years. No doubt, Athanasios wanted the Necropolis Detective back where he belonged— with his family, the Rights.
