📝 Shaw Rocket Fund Accelerator Writing Contest

We're back with some incredible news! As part of Shaw Rocket Fund's ongoing commitment to championing quality children's content, we've teamed up with Wattpad and production partner Shaftesbury to create inclusive narratives for Canadian teens. For over 20 years, Shaw Rocket Fund has been investing in Canadian-made, world-class media content for children and youth viewers. As a vital partner of the children's media sector, Shaw Rocket Fund supports initiatives that reflect Canadian values and diversity, advocate for emerging talent in innovative ways, and drive the industry forward for all Canadian youth.

Now is your chance to have your story heard and to win the opportunity of a lifetime!


In 1,500 words or less, write the beginning of a compelling story aimed at a teen audience. Your characters, themes, and setting should be rooted in diversity and reflect
the narratives that Canadian teens would like to see brought to life.

Your story can be about ANYTHING, as long as it portrays an inclusive storyline, a diverse cast and is aimed at a teen audience.

The grand prizewinner will receive a virtual internship with Shaftesbury where their winning entry will be adapted into a 10-part narrative podcast!

This grand-prize winner will also receive;

- A $3,000 option agreement from Wattpad to secure the rights to the winning submission
- Access to the virtual writer's room at Shaftesbury
- Coaching by Wattpad studios editorial team
- 3 x one-on-one mentorship sessions by a publishing professional to help you get your novel finished.

All remaining 9 finalists will all receive a virtual mentorship session with Wattpad's Talent Team and/or Wattpad Talent!

Before the winner is selected our 10 finalists will have their story featured on the @RocketFund profile in a reading list, along with a sticker identifying their stories as finalists.


Not sure where to get started? Here's some FAQ's that might help you out:

Q: Does my story need to be under a specific theme or genre?
A: No – We're looking for stories across every genre!

Q: Do I need to submit a script or screenplay?
A: No – this can be anything from an idea arc, to the first chapter of a world that's yet to be built. Your imagination and the 1,500 word count is the only limit!

Q: What age group should my story be aimed at?
A: Your content must be aimed at teens (13-17) to be eligible.

Q: Any other tips?
A: We are seeking stories featuring diverse characters and/or storylines that would be perfect to turn into a 10-part narrative podcast and eventually into an audiovisual program!

Q: What's a narrative podcast?
A: A series for your ears! With actors, sound effects and enhanced production.

Q: Can anyone in Canada enter?
A: Yes, any resident of Canada 13 years of age or older – finally we can include Quebec!

Q: Can I submit fanfiction or mature content?
A: Unfortunately fanfiction and mature content will not be permitted as part of this contest. Please keep in mind that your story needs to be aimed at and relevant to teens and younger audiences, so your stories need to be age appropriate to qualify for the prize.

- Deadline to enter this contest is September 17, 2020,at 11:59PM Pacific Standard Time
- Judging will be between September 18 and September 29, 2020
- Finalists will be announced on the Shaw Rocket Fund profile on October 7, 2020
- Grand Prize Winner will be announced on the Shaw Rocket Fund profile on October 9, 2020

📜 Submission Requirements

- First chapter of a new story 1,500 words or less
- Posted as a new story on your Wattpad profile
- Submission must be in English
- Story must be tagged #ShawRocketFundContest
- Any story not compliant with Wattpad's content guidelines will be removed immediately

🏆 Prizes

Ten (10) finalist entries (selected by Shaw Rocket Fund & Wattpad) will receive:

- A sticker for the cover of their story, identifying their entry as a top 10 finalist
- A feature on the Shaw Rocket Fund's profile (Wattpad.com/user/RocketFund) in a reading list 

One (1) grand prize winner selected from the finalist pool above will also receive:

- An option agreement (ARV, $3,000.00 CAD) to secure the rights to the winning submission
- A virtual internship of no fewer than 10 hours with Shaftesbury to participate in a virtual writers room, where their winning entry will be adapted into a 10-part narrative podcast to be distributed across relevant podcast networks (ARV. $150)
- Mentorship from Wattpad: The author will be given coaching by Wattpad Studios editorial team.
- 3 x 1:1 sessions with a publishing industry professional.

All remaining nine (9) finalists will receive:

- A virtual mentorship session with Wattpad's Talent Team and/or Wattpad Talent (TBD)

Eligibility Requirements

NO PURCHASE NECESSARY. Contest starts 9:00 am PT 08/17/20 and ends 11:59 pm PT on 09/17/20. Open only to legal residents of Canada, 13 years or older at the time of entry. 9 semi-finalist prizes, each consisting of a mention on Sponsor's website and a virtual mentoring session (no monetary value); one (1) Grand Prize: an option agreement worth $3000 and a 10 hour paid internship with Shaftesbury. (approx. retail value: $150 (based on sample hourly wage in Ontario)) Odds of winning depend on number of eligible entries received and skill in meeting judging criteria. Math skill-testing question also required. Subject to Official Rules
